Energy Saving Tips

Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature throughout the day when you are not at home. By lowering the temperature 5 degrees every day 8 hours during the winter, you could save up to 15% per year in heating costs.

Make sure that heating registers and air returns are not blocked by drapery or furniture.

Moist air will make you feel warmer, so use a humidifier during the winter months.

Use the “energy saver” setting on all applicable appliances.

Replace appliances older than 10 years. According to the Department of Energy, newer high efficiency appliances could save a home owner up to $135 annually.

Run the dishwasher only when fully loaded.

Wash and dry full loads of clothes and wash clothes with warm/cold water and rinse with just cold water.

Run the ventilation fan in the bathroom with the door closed. A ventilation fan can vent away a houseful of warm air within an hour.

Insulate the house correctly.

Seal leaks around doors, windows, etc. with caulking or weather stripping.

Plug any gaps around pipes, fans, etc. that run to the exterior.
